Paraguay |
I travelled to Paraguay from May 31 - June 10, 2009 with the Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas to explore the challenges facing their new president Fernando Lugo. Paraguay is being run over by large agrobusinesses such as Cargill, Monsanto, and ADM that subjugate the country to a large monoculture export economy rather than sustainable agriculture designed to benefit small farmers and feed local people. These are the same corporations that have made family farms so financially unviable in the United States. We also examined the political effects of the 35-year Stroessner dictatorship and calls for Paraguay to quit sending military troops to the School of the Americas.
