In the most controversial and overreported incidents of the evening,
a person broke into the compound inside the base and drove military vehicles
to the gate where they were burned. Most activists denounced this as an
unnecessary and violent act in what had larely been a non-violent struggle
for the departure of the Navy from Vieques. Others noted that it was a
logical reaction to 60 years of repression, and paled in comparison to
the abuses the Navy had committeed on the island.
