Being an active and engaged member of the community has always been important to me. Here is a listing of some of my more significant campus, community, and volunteer activities.


2006 - 2010: Board Member, Peace History Society (PHS).

2007: Chair, Andean Studies Committee of the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH).

2006 - present: News editor and reader for Third World View on WORT 89.9 FM, Madison's listener-sponsored community radio (listen live at 5 pm central Sunday evenings).

2006 - present: Council Member, Ethnicity, Race and Indigenous Peoples (ERIP) section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).

2006: Secretary, Andean Studies Committee of the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH).

2006 - present: Web Editor, H-Peace (part of H-Net).

2006 - present: Web Editor, Peace History Society (PHS).

2005 - 2007: Chair, Teaching/Teaching Materials Committee of the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH).

2005 - present: Web Editor and Advisory Board Member, H-Latam (part of H-Net).

2005 - present: Administrative Committee member of Board of Directors of Historians Against the War (HAW).

2005 - present: Member: Midwest Social Forum (MWSF) Planning Committee. Organize June 2006 meeting of community organizations in Milwaukee.

2004 - present: Vice-president: Board of Directors, Community Action on Latin America (CALA), Madison, Wisconsin.

2003: Thomas McGann Memorial book prize committee, Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies (RMCLAS).

2001 - present: Member, Faculty Advisor Board, Women's Resource Center, Truman State University.

2001 - present: Secretary for the Truman State University chapter of American Association of University Professors (AAUP) which seeks to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good.

2000 - present: Coordinator, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium and member, Kirksville Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee.

2000 - present: Founding member and webmaster for the Ecuadorian Studies section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).

2000 - present: Member of Advisory Board, Midwest Association of Latin American Studies (MALAS).

2000 - present: Coordinator of the Social Science Faculty Research Seminar, a forum at Truman State University for professors to share the results of, and gather feedback on, their research.

1999 - present: Affiliated faculty: Affiliated faculty: Universidad Intercultural de las Nacionalidades y Pueblos Indígenas (UINPI), Ecuador, a university run for and by Indigenous peoples in Ecuador.

1998 - 1999: Member of Project Gettysburg-León, a sister city project with León, Nicaragua.

1998 - 1999: Faculty Technology Liaison to assist in integration of technology into the classroom, Gettysburg College.

1994 - present: Founder, president of the board of directors, and co-Webmaster of NativeWeb, a World-Wide Web Internet site dedicated to the broad electronic dissemination of information and materials on Indigenous peoples around the world. Includes a section entitled Abya Yala Net dedicated to materials on Indigenous peoples in Latin America.

1994 - present: Member of the Comité Consultivo Internacional (International Consultive Committee) for Anuario Mariateguiano (Lima, Peru).

1995 - 1996: Member of Comunicaciones Graficas Interactivas (CGI) at Ecuanex in Quito, Ecuador, a work group dedicated to placing information from Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Ecuador on the World-Wide Web.

1994 - 1995: Intern with the South and Meso American Indian Rights Center (SAIIC). I continue to collaborate with them on a varity of Internet-related projects.

1990 - 1993: Co-coordinator of Latin American Solidarity, a University of Kansas-based group dedicated to education, fundraising, and direct action to benefit Latin America. Active member of Latin American Solidarity from 1987 to 1993 with a variety of responsibilities including programming, publicity, fundraising, and organizing direct action campaigns. Assisted in founding and running other programs including the Lawrence Latin American Refugee Committee and the Lawrence-El Papaturro Sister-City Friendship Committee.

1991 - 1993: Graduate student representative on the Latin American Standing Field Committee, Department of History, University of Kansas. Later served as graduate student representative on Awards Committee (1996 - 1997).

1991 - 1993: Kansas State Witness for Peace Coordinator and Regional Steering Committee member, included organizing a student delegation to visit El Salvador and Nicaragua in January 1993.

1989 – 1990: Founding member of the Lawrence Latin American Refugee Committee (LLARC), which assisted Central American refugees on their way to Canada.

1988 – 1990: Founding member and co–coordinator of Lawrence Trade for Peace, an organization which imported and sold Nicaraguan stamps as a symbolic and low–intensity resistance against the United States trade embargo against that country.

1988 – 1993: Member of the editorial board and layout artist for the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice’s Peace Monitor.

1986 - 1987: Paralegal worker for the Overground Railroad in Harlingen, Texas, helping resettle Central American refugees in Canada and the United States.

1985-1986: Human rights documentation, Witness for Peace, Jinotega, Nicaragua.

1982-1983: Cultural exchange program, Intermenno Trainee Program, Friesland and Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

1981-1982: Volunteer in Day Care Nursery, London, Ontario, Canada, Mennonite Board of Missions.
